The Railway Board has proposed a plan of Rs 141.23 crore for the modernisation and development of 11 goods depots in the Pune Division in Maharashtra. These depots include Chinchwad, Loni, Phursungi, Baramati, Gurmarket, Miraj, Sangli, Karad, and Satara. Pune railway station is part of the Pune Division and is located in Maharashtra's Central Railway (CR) zone.
The move comes in the wake of the need for contemporary infrastructure needed here as the Pune region witnesses rail transit of huge volumes of items including petroleum products, sugar, electronic goods, and vehicles, and the lack has a negative impact on the loading and unloading of these goods at godowns.
Given the commodities loaded and unloaded at these goods terminals, the Railway Board intends to not only improve basic facilities but also to construct high-level platforms and cover sheds. There are also plans to make these depots more open and to brighten their interiors.
The depots will have corporate furniture, modern restrooms, and drinking water facilities for end users as part of the Railway Board's overall upgrade strategy. Porters will have a separate loo. As part of the modernisation effort, the depots will feature a sturdy fencing wall and substantial drainage system.
According to the CR public relations (PR) department, the Pune region sees high volumes of products exchanged, including food, four- and two-wheelers, and so on. The development of goods depots will result in more benefits for the CR in less time. Along with autos, the Pune region sees the transportation of items like as petroleum products, sugar, and electrical goods.
As many as 86 goods trains transporting newly built vehicles were dispatched from Pune to various markets across the country in December 2022. Four-wheeler producers now consider the railway to be the best platform for transporting freshly built vehicles. Companies like as Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, Skoda, Volkswagen, and others use CR to carry their vehicles. For many years, the CR has transported various items (sugar, newly made vehicles in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad) from the Pune Division to other regions of the country.
