Building Resilience: Karnataka's Bold Steps Towards a Sustainable Energy Future
In a resounding declaration of his commitment to a sustainable future, Karnataka's Minister of Energy, Shri K.J. George addressed the industry leaders and delegates at the 4th Edition of the Sustainable World Conclave to discuss the urgent need for climate action and outline their ambitious plans for transitioning to green energy sources.
Addressing the gathering, George emphasized the pivotal role energy plays in both causing and mitigating climate change. He stated, "Climate change is no longer a distant threat; it is a reality that we must face head-on to limit rising global temperatures."
The event underscored the critical importance of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, with the energy sector being the largest contributor to global emissions. Karnataka has made a bold commitment to shift towards green energy sources, acknowledging the need for immediate action.
George highlighted the "Karnataka model," showcasing the state's remarkable journey into renewable energy. The state has demonstrated that transitioning to green energy is not just an environmental necessity but also an economic opportunity. It has attracted investments, generated employment, and significantly reduced carbon emissions.
Karnataka's leadership in renewable energy is evident in its ranking as a national leader in the energy transition, as well as topping the State Energy Efficiency Index for two consecutive years. The state has implemented two key policies: the Karnataka Renewable Energy Policy of 2019-2027, with a focus on achieving 10 gigawatts of additional renewable energy capacity by 2027, and the Energy Conservation and Energy Efficiency Policy 2022-2027, aiming to conserve 744 million units of electricity consumption and reduce CO2 emissions.
Karnataka leads the nation in setting up infrastructure for solar, wind, and other renewable energy sources, with a total capacity of 62.45%. This has not only provided uninterrupted power to consumers but also addressed social issues.
Recognizing the importance of energy storage to mitigate climate change, Karnataka has embraced pumped hydro storage technology, which plays a critical role in ensuring a stable and sustainable electricity supply. To address abnormal variations in demand, especially during irrigation pump operation, the Karnataka government plans to provide power supply during solar hours through off-grid solar pump sets or feeder solarization, ensuring farmers have access to continuous power during the day.
The commitment to mitigating climate challenges is evident in Karnataka's recent green investments. The state has ambitious plans to develop 10,000 megawatts of renewable energy by 2027, facilitate the growth of the electric vehicle ecosystem, and establish renewable energy hybrid parks. Additionally, the government plans to include the development of 4 million metric tons per annum (MTPA) ammonia hydrogen facilities, hydrogen value hubs, agriculture feeder solarization, agri-pump solarization, and utility-scale battery systems to support variable renewable energy sources. An integrated 3-gigawatt storage system is also under development. Karnataka, with its abundance of solar and wind energy resources, is positioned to become a hub for green hydrogen production, further contributing to a sustainable energy future.
The Hon’ble minister also stressed the importance of proactive collaboration among innovators, entrepreneurs, financiers, and the government to drastically reduce CO2 emissions, combat climate change, and promote sustainable growth.
Additionally, on a local level, solid waste management has been a significant issue in the past. However, the state is making strides by finalizing plans for a waste-to-energy plant, set to be inaugurated in the coming months. Furthermore, the government is committed to providing free power to irrigation pump sets up to 10 horsepower to boost agricultural production, aligning with their vision for a more sustainable and prosperous future. Karnataka is fully aware of the changes happening around them and is actively preparing to adapt and lead in the transition to a sustainable energy future.
