It may be recalled that the Former Samajwadi Party and Apna Dal MP Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf Ahmed were gunned down on live television in Prayagraj on Saturday night. There were 160 criminal cases against the five-term MP from Uttar Pradesh and his family. Over time, Ahmed's properties were seized by the UP police, with a total value of well over Rs 11,000 crore.
Atiq was lying low for a while, especially after the Yogi Adityanath led Bharatiya Janata Party had come into power in Uttar Pradesh and did a crackdown on mafia, especially those who were politicians from Bahujan Samaj Party or the Samajwadi Party.
Ahmed shot to fame once more last month after his son Asad Ahmad was accused of shooting Umesh Pal and his two guards during an altercation that was also captured on tape. A few days later, Asad was shot and killed in an encounter with UP police in Jhansi. The lawyer, Umesh Pal, who was fatally shot outside his home, was a critical witness in the 2005 slaying of BSP MLA Raju Pal, in which Atiq Ahmed was a major suspect.
Atiq and his family's assets, worth a total of Rs 11,684 crore, have already been seized by the UP police. Atiq’s wife Shaista Praveen is the subject of three ongoing criminal investigations, and officials have also taken her property. The Prayagraj district administration had previously claimed to have released Atiq Ahmed's family's possessions, which were valued at Rs 417 crore.
Atiq reportedly had to shut down his business of shady deals and connections as the Yogi Adityanath administration cracked down on mafia activities in the state. Estimates state that Asiq and his family lost Rs 1200 crore annually as a result of the closures.
Atiq's first criminal case began in 1992 with an abduction case that was reported to the Muthiganj police station.
