Her quest for challenges is the one thing that sets her apart. Having spent 31 years in life insurance, the managing director and chief executive officer of IndiaFirst Life Insurance is faced with one of the biggest challenges in her career: How to change the misconceptions people still hold about life insurance?
“As a woman has to create her own identity, the life insurance industry also has to create its own identity. People are comparing it with other products which are not comparable. When you do not have comparison of equal products, it loses its essence. The comparisons now are surface-level ones. The only thing common is that mutual funds and life insurance both invest in the markets. Otherwise, life insurance is vastly different, with very differing regulatory and risk factors. Life insurance covers risks in many areas.”
Vishakha reckons that because of the experiences people have had with the industry, they have misunderstood life-insurance products. She believes that she can create the right niche for life insurance. That itself is a vast challenge. The life-insurance industry needs the right education and awareness in people’s minds.
Vishakha is also constantly looking at challenges on the professional front. “I did not allow myself to settle down and become complacent. Once I had established a venture, I looked at it as a challenge and took it up with the question of what I could do here next.”
She believes that the best decision she has taken is to find newer challenges. “If something does not demand everything you can give, I think you should go on and find something new. Because only then can passion and involvement in a job emerge.”
In the course of the last 31 years of her career, the avid reader and movie buff has had a very exciting journey in life insurance, and has won many awards and accolades. “I have never planned anything. It’s not that I planned to become a CEO. I have always done the best and given it all that I have got,” she declares.
