In response to India's growing aviation market and rising passenger numbers, Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, also known as GMR Hyderabad International Airport, has operationalised its additional East Area, enhancing passenger facilities and services.
According to the official statement, the operationalisation of the additional East Area at GMR Hyderabad International Airport signifies a significant step toward meeting the increasing demands of India's aviation sector and providing an enhanced and seamless experience for passengers. The expansion is set to contribute to the airport's position as a key gateway for travellers in the region.
It may be noted that India's remarkable economic growth, political stability, and technological advancements have made it the third-largest aviation market globally, with projections indicating it will become the fourth-largest global travel spender by 2030.
As India's air travel sector continues to expand, Hyderabad International Airport is undertaking a comprehensive phase-wise expansion to accommodate over 34 million passengers.
The fourth phase of the expansion has operationalised the additional East Area, spanning 56,474 square metres, seamlessly integrated with the existing terminal. This expansion brings the total operational area to 2,74,118 square metres.
The additional East Area offers 24 remote bus domestic departure gates, 12 passenger boarding aero bridges, contact stands, and a domestic-to-domestic transfer area. Additionally, a dedicated mezzanine floor hosts retail and F&B options.
The expanded area includes 22 escalators, 22 elevators, 2 travelators, 19 staircases, and numerous restrooms for both men and women, ensuring convenience for all passengers.
The key Highlights of the expansion include revamped passenger terminal. The airport's passenger terminal, covering 2,17,664 square metres, has been revamped with additional check-in counters, security-screening machines, emigration counters, immigration counters, and improved lounges, retail, and F&B outlets. A new arrival hall with indoor landscapes and duty-free shopping further enhances the passenger experience.
The new area also has a dedicated space spanning 3511 square metres, that has been introduced to facilitate efficient domestic layovers. It features automatic tray retrieval systems (ATRS) and a separate screening machine for staff, reducing the Minimum Connection Time (MCT) for transfer movements.
The expansion project includes additional aircraft stands, ground service equipment tunnels, rapid taxiways, parallel taxiways, and advanced airfield lighting systems, incorporating sustainable practices. The airport's design is inspired by the Indian Roller bird, a symbolic State Bird of Telangana, representing functionality, atmosphere, and flexibility.
Unlike other airports in the region, Hyderabad International Airport's integrated terminal is a unique facility in South and Central India, which will further attract airlines to choose it as a preferred hub.
