A research on Thursday revealed that about 93 per cent of Indians are more aware of the generative AI’s (Gen AI) significance in comparison to the global population and 45 per cent of them are already using the technology.
The BCG CCI Global Consumer Sentiment Survey 2023 found that following India, the UAE (91 per cent), South Korea (88 per cent), Japan (86 per cent) and China (86 per cent ) were the countries that exhibited higher gen AI awareness. However, despite the familiarity their consumer showcased lower Gen AI adoption.
In the UAE, only 34 per cent of consumers were using Gen AI, while in South Korea and Japan, the reported implementation rates were a mere 26 per cent and 19 per cent, respectively. China had the lowest usage rate among the top five countries, standing at 18 percent.
In a statement, Nivedita Balaji, Associate Director, BCG said, “1 in every 2 Indians who are aware of Gen AI (Chat GPT), end up using it, and this awareness-to-usage conversion ratio is 1.6 times higher for India than the average of all the other 20 countries surveyed. Interestingly, Indians exhibit more mature usage of Gen AI with “Research and assistance at the workplace” being among the top activities performed using Gen AI, versus ‘just for fun” being among the top stated activities in countries like Australia, Germany, Japan, South Korea.”
Over 80 per cent of survey participants demonstrated an awareness of GenAI, with a quarter already having used the technology. Seventy-five percent reported that they have used a GenAI-powered app or service in a variety of ways to address unmet needs.
Additionally, the study highlighted individuals under 35 years of age reported higher awareness and usage of GenAI than those over 35 (86 per cent versus 80 per cent for awareness, and 32 per cent versus 20 per cent for usage, respectively).
