OpenAI’s popular AI chatbot, ChatGPT, is currently experiencing a significant service outage, leaving users around the world unable to access the advanced language model. Reports of issues with ChatGPT spiked starting around 11 am on 3 May, according to data from the outage monitoring service Downdetector.
The outage appears to be widespread, affecting ChatGPT on the web, as well as the iOS and Android mobile apps. Users attempting to interact with the AI are encountering error messages such as "Request Timeout" and are unable to generate responses from the chatbot.
Social media has been abuzz with frustrated ChatGPT users reporting the outage and their inability to access the service. Downdetector data indicates that a staggering 90 per cent of the reported problems are specifically related to the ChatGPT chatbot, while smaller percentages of users are also facing issues with the OpenAI website and login functionality.
OpenAI has not yet officially acknowledged or provided any statement regarding the ongoing outage at the time of this report. However, the company faced a similar widespread disruption in service last month, which was eventually resolved after OpenAI cited "increased latency and errors affecting both ChatGPT and APIs" as the cause.
ChatGPT, a powerful language model trained by OpenAI, has gained immense popularity since its public release, being utilised by individuals and businesses alike for a wide range of tasks, from writing and analysis to coding and creative projects. As such, a prolonged outage could have significant impacts on the productivity and workflows of numerous users who have come to rely on the advanced AI system.
