Xiaomi has showcased the Redmi A4 5G in India, the first smartphone powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 4S Gen 2 chip, offering 5G connectivity for under Rs 10,000. Unveiled at the India Mobile Congress (IMC) on October 16, 2024, this smartphone marks a significant step in making 5G technology accessible to millions of Indians. The Qualcomm chipset, initially announced at the Snapdragon for India Summit on July 31, 2024, powers the device and is poised to revolutionise the entry-level segment.

Qualcomm’s Strategic Play Against MediaTek
The launch of the Snapdragon 4S Gen 2 represents a critical moment in Qualcomm’s strategy to counter the rising dominance of MediaTek, which has made substantial inroads in the affordable smartphone segment. MediaTek’s Dimensity series has not only captured significant market share in budget smartphones, but it’s also snapping at Qualcomm’s heels in the premium space with the upcoming Dimensity 9400 chipset. The Dimensity 9400 is expected to challenge Qualcomm’s dominance in high-end devices, thanks to its strong performance and energy efficiency. However, Qualcomm is confident that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, which is set to be revealed next week, will hold its own in the premium segment. Qualcomm’s dual-pronged strategy of capturing both the budget and premium markets is central to maintaining its leadership in the smartphone chipset industry.
Affordable 5G with Premium Features
The Redmi A4 5G combines affordability with features typically seen in more expensive devices. Powered by the Snapdragon 4S Gen 2, the phone supports Full HD+ displays at 90Hz, smooth visuals for gaming and streaming, and Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 4+ technology, which charges the device to 50 percent in just 15 minutes.
In terms of camera performance, the Spectra 12-bit ISP enables up to 84 MP single-shot capture, providing high-resolution photos, while video image stabilisation reduces blurriness during recording. These features ensure a seamless photography experience at an entry-level price .
