White-collar hiring in India saw a remarkable 8 per cent increase during the second quarter of 2023, according to the latest findings from a hiring platform.
According to the report, the Information Technology (IT) sector continued to lead in-demand sectors, with 18 per cent of hiring activity. The sector's resilience was attributed to its constant evolution, creating a continuous demand for skilled workers.
Overall, the report noted that both employers and employees showed an increasing demand for specific skill sets. In addition to technical skills, employers emphasised the importance of soft skills like communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving in today's dynamic workplace.
But a significant 62 per cent of surveyed employees reported job losses, either personally or among their peers. This wave of layoffs intensified job competition and left many job seekers facing financial insecurity.
The Indeed report found that fresh graduates encountered substantial challenges in the current job market. The majority (71 per cent) of employers considered market conditions for new graduates to be challenging, citing limited job openings (41 per cent) and evolving skill requirements (11 per cent) as the primary hurdles.
Despite these challenges, there was a 5 per cent increase in employers hiring fresh graduates, signaling a potential positive trend for the upcoming quarters.
Regional Disparities
Job market conditions were not uniform across India. Metro cities such as Kolkata (50 per cent), Chennai (46 per cent), and Delhi/NCR (45 per cent) faced a scarcity of job openings for fresh graduates, while non-metro cities and emerging tech hubs like Hyderabad (37 per cent) and Pune (39 per cent) showed high demand.
Outlook and Recommendations
The white-collar job market in India is expected to have a mixed outlook in the coming months. Tech skills will remain in high demand, and discussions on the future of work, including hybrid and remote options, will become more common. Continuous learning and skill development will be essential for job seekers to thrive in this evolving landscape, noted the report.
