Telecom operator Vodafone Idea (VIL) has been hit with demand orders totaling over Rs 73 crore from various GST offices across India. The company is accused of short-paying taxes and availing excess input tax credit (ITC), resulting in penalties and interest charges.
The most substantial penalty was imposed by the GST office in Kolkata, which has demanded Rs 33.44 crore from VIL, citing alleged tax shortfalls on outward supplies and excessive ITC claims.
Similarly, the GST office in Noida issued a penalty of Rs 26.89 crore for alleged discrepancies related to ITC and tax payments for the financial year 2019-20.
Additional penalties include Rs 10.94 crore levied by the Patna GST office. Smaller penalties were also issued by offices in Chandigarh, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and Himachal Pradesh, ranging from Rs 4,211 to Rs 1.57 crore.
“The company does not agree with the orders and will take appropriate action(s) for rectification/ reversal of the same,” VIL said in a regulatory filing.
