In a show of unity, the leaders of the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany and Italy have issued a joint statement addressing the escalating tensions in the Middle East, with a particular focus on the situation in Gaza.
Following high-level discussions, the five nations expressed their full support for ongoing efforts to de-escalate hostilities and secure a ceasefire and hostage release deal in Gaza.
The leaders endorsed a renewed call from US President Joe Biden, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and Qatari Amir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani to reinitiate talks later this week, emphasising the urgent need to conclude an agreement as soon as possible. "There is no further time to lose," the statement read, stressing the importance of all parties fulfilling their responsibilities to ensure peace.
The statement also highlighted the necessity of ensuring unfettered delivery and distribution of humanitarian aid in the region, signalling a deep concern for the worsening humanitarian situation on the ground.
In a stern warning to Tehran, the five nations voiced their support for Israel's right to defend itself against Iranian aggression and attacks by Iran-backed terrorist groups. They called on Iran to cease its ongoing threats of military action against Israel, warning of the "serious consequences for regional security" should such an attack occur.
This joint declaration comes after the killing of Ismail Haniyeh, the senior political leader of Hamas. As per the media reports the strike occurred in the early hours of the morning, targeting a location where Haniyeh was believed to be meeting with other high-ranking members of the organisation.
The killing of Haniyeh could lead to significant retaliation from Hamas and other allied groups, potentially escalating the conflict even further.
