Strengthening the security system of the state, the Uttar Pradesh government has decided to implement the police commissionerate system in three districts of Uttar Pradesh including Ghaziabad, Agra and Prayagraj, the proposal for which has been passed by the state cabinet on Friday.
According to the proposal, Police commissioners will be posted soon in all these three cities. The state government had earlier implemented the police commissionerate system in districts of Gautam Buddha Nagar (Noida), Kanpur, Varanasi and state capital Lucknow.
It may be noted here that a number of government committees have pushed for the implementation of the Police Commissionerate system in such cities, where the population is growing quickly and exceeds 10 lakhs.
Giving the details, Minister for Urban Development AK Sharma said that these three metropolitan cities will be declared as metropolitan areas first as per the rules of CRPC. The commissionerate system will then be put into place throughout the entire district, just like it is in other districts.
He said that Agra with a population of 44,18, 797 as per the 2011 census is important from industrial, tourism and law and order point of view.
Similarly, Ghaziabad having a population of 46,61,452 as per 2011 census is also a big and busy district. It is a part of the National Capital Region (NCR) and is also important from an industrial point of view.
Prayagraj having a population of around 59.54 lakh is important from religious and cultural point of view. Besides, Maha Kumbh is to be organised in Prayagraj in the year 2025.
Three more cities added in the third phase
The police commissionerate system has so far been implemented by the Yogi government in three phases in 7 major cities. First, on January 13, 2020, Lucknow and Noida in Uttar Pradesh adopted the Police Commissioner system. The first police commissioners in Lucknow and Noida were Sujit Pandey and Alok Singh.
The Police Commissioner system was then put into place in Kanpur and Varanasi on March 26, 2021, as part of the second phase. Asim Arun in Kanpur and A Satish Ganesh in Varanasi were made police commissioners. Agra, Ghaziabad, and Prayagraj are the three cities where the Yogi government has now implemented the police commissioner system in its third phase.
Rural areas will also be included in the entire district
Along with urban police stations, rural police stations will also be included in the commissionerate. Recently, while reorganizing the Police Commissionerate system in Lucknow, Kanpur and Varanasi, the Council of Ministers decided to abolish the rural district system in all the three districts and include the entire district in the Police Commissionerate. This decision was taken keeping in view the practical problems being faced in the operation of rural police stations. Similarly, now the rural police stations in these three districts will be under the police commissionerate. The new system will come into effect after the notification is issued.
