Akshay Kumar has been the box-office savior, time and again, and with the success of Toilet- Ek Prem Katha, the actor has very well stamped his importance in the film industry.
We don’t usually see a small budgeted oddball film raking in good numbers. But, with the release of TEPK, the trend has been defied. Bollywood is witnessing an odd phase, with films sinking flat at the box-office. Forget being rejected, films are not even given a chance by the movie-goers. This trend has shown no sparing; from big to the small films, everything has been gulped.
Amidst the box-office struggle, we saw a very offbeat film rise. Credit goes to Akhay kumar for choosing a bold topic like open defecation. KriArj Productions also placed a heavy bet with Shree Narayan Singh, a new face in the industry, directing the film. With all things aside, we all know how the venture proved for the actor, director and the producers.
TEPK opened on a decent note, but what followed was a great jump in numbers. The film very well utilized the extended Independence Day weekend and collected close to Rs 90 crore in 5 days flat. We are talking big numbers for a Rs 18 crore film, and that too in the first five days. TEPK, defying all the predictions, closed week 1 close to the Rs 100 crore mark.
The Bhumi Pednekar starrer maintained a good pace in the second and the third week. The film is still running in a little over 500 screens in India and is likely to get wrapped up by the end of this week. TEPK stands the chance to cross Akshay Kumar’s highest grosser Rowdy Rathore (Rs 131 crore) if it gathers some moolah over the next few days. TEPK currently stands at a total collection of Rs 129 crore. The film crossed the lifetime collections of Airlift (Rs 128 crore), Rustom (127 crore) and Jolly LLB2 (Rs 117 crore).
TEPK is currently the second most profitable Hindi release of the year after Baahubali-2. The latter raked in a profit of 468 per cent at the box-office. The actuals of TEPK stands at 438 per cent and is expected to close by 450 per cent profit at the box-office. The other Bollywood movies with good profit percentage are- Hindi Medium (213 per cent), Jolly LLB2 (160 per cent), Badrinath Ki Dulhania (158 per cent) and Kaabil (153 per cent).
Akshay Kumar has delivered 5 back-to-back Rs 100 crore movies in less than 2 years of time. The year 2018, has got a lot up its sleeve for the actor. Akshay will be next seen in the magnificent Robot 2.0 alongside superstar Rajinikanth.
