You have spent almost four decades in the tourism sector. How has the tourism industry changed over the years?
Well, when I started, there were significant changes. If I were to pick some key themes, one is infrastructure. Airports and other travel-related infrastructure have become much more efficient over the years. Another key change is the shift from tourism being linked to international tourist arrivals to focusing on the Indian traveller. We believe in building world-class products for the Indian market. Additionally, the capacity and mobility have improved. In the past, there were challenges with airlines, but in the last two decades, stability has started to come, along with technological advancements. The Indian travel market has matured, and there have been significant policy changes and foreign investments.
How challenging is it to maintain a strong position amid fierce competition and constant industry developments?
India is a challenging market, but it's not impossible. To stay strong, you need to find the right formula for delivering excellence at the lowest cost, not by compromising quality but by operating efficiently. It's essential to understand the Indian market, the challenges it presents, and build plans to operate effectively within this environment. Additionally, upskilling and training people are crucial. We all share the responsibility of improving our workforce and working alongside the government to address these issues.
What led you to enter what some might consider a crowded market like Goa?
When we entered the hospitality industry with InterGlobe Hotels, we saw an opportunity in the mid-market space. Most of the market was unstructured and lacked quality international mid-market options. Our approach is to partner with the best and build world-class products. India still has a significant gap in this segment. Even in Goa, there's room for more hotels of this style. Goa is becoming a year-round market and can accommodate more quality, compliant hotels.
What kind of weight do you give to green investments and sustainability in the hotels you build?
Sustainability is a top priority for us. Our hotels follow the IGBC Gold Certificate norms, and we're committed to responsible and sustainable practices. Sustainability is essential, and as a responsible organization, we ensure our properties meet the highest standards in this regard. It's a department in every sector now, and we take it seriously.

Diversity and sustainability are crucial in the hospitality business as they help create meaningful conversations and ensure that all sectors of the industry are contributing positively to society.
