Adapting to technological innovations is not merely advantageous but essential for staying competitive and resilient in the face of an evolving global market.
Industry experts shared their strategies for driving digital initiatives and the role of a play matrix in synchronising planning and exhibition for freight carriage, in a session chaired by Arihant Garg, Partner - Lighthouse – Data & Analytics Practice, KPMG.
“In Bangalore, Domino's has introduced a 20-minute delivery service with an emphasis on supply chain efficiency. The organisation ensures that materials are available at the proper temperature by operating 8 manufacturing and distribution centres throughout more than 400 Indian towns. To forecast demand and guarantee temperature compliance, big data and forecasting engines are employed.
Truck tracking and temperature compliance are achieved through the use of IoT sensors and digital location, guaranteeing prompt pizza delivery and reducing waste," said Rahul Bharde, SVP & Head of Analytics & Insights, Jubilant Foodworks.
Discussing how digital and technological advancements can improve the efficiency and transparency of several operations,
Anirban Basu, Executive Director and Head of Supply Chain at Dalmia Bharat Limited said, "Businesses have embraced data-driven solutions like route tracking, full shipment tracking and enhanced customer outreach to cut down on inefficiencies."
Furthermore, emphasising choosing the appropriate technology, Basu says, "Companies are now more concerned with service aspects like consistent delivery and plant-level solutions. The process can become more visible, transparent and efficient if technology is implemented on time," he added.
Speaking about how Standard operating procedures (SOP) have become essential for success, Rajeev Mehta, Chief Logistics Officer at UltraTech Cement said, "They prevent democratic practices. Change management is crucial, as it educates people about the change and its benefits. Implementation is a 3 to 5 year process."
He further added, “For the last four years, logistic control has been implemented to address some key issues affecting operations, reducing PowerPoint presentations, connecting digitally and improving work-life balance. 90 per cent of employees leave their offices by 6 pm, allowing for remote work and real-time response to emergencies."
“The digital twin helps in addressing supply chain fragmentation, product hierarchies and demand forecasting and has several benefits, including moving from reactive to proactive planning, enabling simulations of potential events and integrating digital capabilities into supply chain planning. According to me, this shift from reactive to proactive planning and digital integration is essential for a successful supply chain”, Chiranjoy Chowdhuri, Vice President Digital and Analytics, Mankind Pharma Limited, emphasised.
“I think there is a problem involving data governance and master management. Bringing all data in one place, preferably in the cloud ensuring the right people are involved, identifying the right owners and addressing data problems as close to the source as possible. This is crucial for strategic data management”, he added.
Speaking at the BW Supply Chain Summit & Awards 2023, Abhishek Purwar, Global Director Supply Chain Architecture at Anheuser-Busch InBev, highlighted the need for better data interpretation.
“I believe that the challenges of data mining in the Budweiser family are focusing on the planning process, the actual reality of operations and the lack of streamline data, which can lead to higher market rates and unexpected events. The need for training and development of teams to interpret and interpret data effectively," he concluded.
