According to a survey conducted in support with Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) across India and certain other parts of the world, the survey specifies that corporates and other Indian organizations prefer applicants with a degree from an international university.
The survey capturing the impact of career and college counselling was announced on Wednesday (30th August) at the International Career and College Counselling(IC3) Conference at JW Marriott, Aerocity, New Delhi. The findings of the survey include opinions and figures of high schools, universities, school leaders and educators, students, counsellors, global academic institutions and industry experts.
As per the survey, it is felt by 56% universities that high schools need to play a bigger role in a smooth transition for students from schools to universities. 98% universities also feel that more information and career counselling is needed at the level of high school to better equip the students.
35% students prefer parents as the guiding factor for college selection, while 33% students rely on the internet.
58% universities focus on “relationship-building/engagement” while interacting with high schools, while universities confessed that their prime area of focus is “student recruitment.”
31% universities witnessed a slight increase of 3-9% in international students enrollment while 45% universities felt there was not much change and felt it was the same as last year.
Due to lack of awareness and opportunities that certain vocational courses bring to the table as compared to conventional ones, pupils opt for traditional courses. It was also found out that 40% students prefer options such as science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
22% students opted for arts, entertainment and sports while 17% chose health and medicine and only 1% opted for business and finance.
46% educators felt that students and parents are most stressed out about career related decisions.
Moreover, use of technology in the field of career counselling has increased in the recent past. 38% students witnessed their counsellors using some or the other form of technology to guide them.
It was also witnessed that student enrollment in international universities had increased with 45% students preferring US to study abroad, while 14% opted for Canada. 13% applicants chose UK, 10% for Australia, 8% and 7% for South East Asia and Europe respectively.
