Established in 1981, SP Jain Institute of Management and Research (SPJIMR), Mumbai, features among the top 10 B-schools in India.
With its academic record, it has succeeded in featuring in lists that has country’s some of the best public institutes. In March 2016, the institute signed an MoU with Khadi and Village Industries Commission to provide project consultancy for a scheme that will aim at regenerating traditional industries across 400 traditional village industry clusters in India.
“We believe in leveraging the skills of our faculty and making a larger contribution to society, all of which is consistent with SPJIMR’s mission of influencing practice and promoting value-based growth,” says dean Ranjan Banerjee.
SPJIMR offers four kinds of programmes — Post Graduate Diploma in Management, PG Programme in Management, Global Management Programme, and Fellow Programme in Management.
A unique course is Family-managed Business Programme, which is designed for the second generation of family businesses. “This programme is a leader in its own right. The programme has over 3,000 alumni and we start a new batch in every six months,” says Banerjee.
Another unique course is the PG Programme in Development Management, which is designed for managers from the social sector and corporate foundations, who seek to apply management principles to enhance effectiveness in this sector. “This is a modular programme and we are into our 10th batch. We have many testimonials of social impact in this sector,” says Banerjee.
SPJIMR has partnered with Harvard Business Press to launch a workshop on teaching with simulations for faculty across the country.
SPJIMR has a teaching strength of over 106, including full-time as well as visiting faculty. Many of the faculty are drawn from the industry, and has over 10 years of experience. The institute thus, have a healthy mix of fresh PhDs and seasoned corporate leaders, who subsequently get a PhD.
SPJIMR also has a PG executive management programme, where executives spend nine days a quarter on campus in a 21-month programme. Partners include companies such as L&T, BPCL, Mahindra, India Medtronic, Ambuja Cements, Pidilite and Ashland Industries.
“We have recently started a co-created management development programme with Mahindra, where one of the programmes is for high potential woman leaders, which is 50 per cent delivered by senior internal Mahindra faculty, and 50 per cent by our faculty,” says Banerjee.
At SPJIMR, for the PGDM class of 2016, 89 companies queued up to hire 226 participants. The average salary increased to Rs 19.3 lakh, from Rs 18.2 lakh last year. The highest salary offered on campus also spiked by 25 per cent to Rs 37 lakh per annum.
SPJIMR has a unique programme of Autumn internships unlike summers at other B-Schools. The Autumn Project is undertaken by a participant after almost 16-week of receiving specialised input in the second year of the PGDM year programme, including 3 weeks at some of the top US universities such as Carnegie Mellon, Cornell, Michigan State and Darden for advanced courses.
The placement season witnessed the regular recruiters such as BCG, Deloitte, Accenture Strategy, Mahindra GMC, HUL, P&G, Nestlé, Colgate-Palmolive, etc. Some of the new recruiters include Avendus Capital, Diamond PwC, PayTM, Cloudtail, Astrazeneca, Reckitt Benckiser, General Mills, ITC, J&J, L’Oreal, GEP, Miebach Consulting, Samara Capital, Investec, DBS Bank, ICICI Prudential, MCX, Directi, HCL Infosystems and LinkedIn.
