The Supreme Court will hear the plea that held back National Entrance Eligibility Test (NEET) for a year, on July 7. A bench headed by chief justice of India, T.S. Thakur announced that the case will be heard by a bench presided by justice Anil R. Dave, as the same bench had previously passed the order of staying back the examination.
The other judges on the Bench for listening to cases related to NEET 2016 were Justices AK Sikri, RK Agarwal, AK Goel and R Banumathi.
Earlier the Apex Court on May 27 had refused to stay the National Eligibility Entrance Test NEET ordinance exempting Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Punjab for this year, and announced that the matter should be mentioned before CJI bench in July.
The case started after a plea was filed by health activist Anand Rai in the Supreme Court in May this year, seeking quashing of an ordinance which allows states to continue with their separate entrance tests for various medical courses, instead of a uniform medical entrance test NEET, for academic year 2016-17.
According to the petition, the Centre’s decision was in violation of Section 14 (right to equality) and Section 21 (right to life) in terms of its random character and with regards to the students who would suffer because of the constantly changing decisions by the Centre.
Phase II of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test or NEET is scheduled to be conducted on July 24. The admit cards of the following examination will be available on the website from July 08, 2016 as per tentative schedule.
