Retail tomato prices have fallen by 22.4% month-on-month due to improved supplies across the country, the Consumer Affairs Ministry said on Sunday. The all-India average retail price of tomatoes stood at Rs 52.35 per kg on 14 November, down from Rs 67.50 per kg on 14 October, according to official data.
Delhi's Azadpur mandi, a key wholesale market, recorded a nearly 50 per cent drop in modal wholesale prices during the same period, declining from Rs 5,883 per quintal to Rs 2,969 per quintal. Similar trends were observed in major markets like Pimpalgaon in Maharashtra, Madanapalle in Andhra Pradesh, and Kolar in Karnataka, the ministry stated.
While arrivals at major tomato centres like Madanapalle and Kolar have tapered off, seasonal supplies from Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat have effectively filled supply gaps across the country, the statement highlighted.
Favourable weather conditions have further supported crop growth and ensured smooth transportation from fields to markets, helping stabilise prices.
The ministry's data reflects the impact of these improved supply chain dynamics, bringing much-needed relief to consumers after months of elevated tomato prices.
