Apple is reportedly set to launch a wall-mounted display designed to control home appliances, facilitate video conferencing, and leverage AI through its Apple Intelligence platform to manage various applications. According to a Bloomberg report, this product is expected in March and would be Apple’s first release following the debut of its new Apple Intelligence features, which include an enhanced Siri assistant.
The device, known internally as "J490," could serve as a showcase for Apple’s AI platform, Apple Intelligence, potentially demonstrating the company’s updated voice recognition capabilities. This wall-mounted display could be priced as high as $1,000, depending on its specifications. Notably, the suggested price might apply to a high-end model, while a more basic, display-only version could be less costly.
Described as a wall-mounted "iPad," this device is expected to feature a square shape, roughly the size of two iPhones positioned side by side, with a 6-inch radius. It will reportedly come in black and silver and operate as a standalone unit, although certain functions may require integration with an iPhone.
This development follows reports of Apple exploring a robotic device — essentially an iPad affixed to a robotic arm. Additionally, there have been rumours of a high-end device combining elements of an iPad, Apple TV, and HomePod.
Apple has yet to make significant strides in the smart home market, an area currently dominated by Amazon and Google. To improve compatibility with third-party products, Apple has joined the Matter consortium, which aims to standardise smart home devices across brands.
As Apple refocuses on AI and smart home technology, it has reportedly redirected resources from the now-defunct Project Titan, the Apple Car project. This shift follows Apple Vision Pro’s lukewarm reception, which, with a price tag of over $3,500, was more of a technological showcase than a commercial hit. Vision Pro serves as part of Apple’s long-term strategy to establish itself in the augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) markets, with Meta currently leading in this space.
