Veteran journalist and Group Editorial Director of India Today Raj Chengappa has been re-elected as the President of the Editors' Guild of India.
At the Annual General meeting of the Guild on Saturday (February 18) Chengappa was unanimously re-elected as its President and Prakash Dubey as General Secretary.
The Guild also elected Kalyani Shankar as Treasurer.
At the meeting, the Guild decided to take a fresh look at the criminal defamation law in India and explore legal options for seeking its abrogation, the statement added.
The Guild also discussed many issues including the publication of exit poll results by the online edition of Dainik Jagran after the first phase of Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, despite the Election Commission rules stipulating that exit polls not be published until all phases of any elections are over.
“I am honoured to be re-elected at a testing time for the profession. There are issues of protecting press freedom, reporting in conflict zones, withstanding pressures from various quarters and being more responsible in our coverage. We will endeavour to address these issues,” Chengappa told BW Businessworld.
