I have been using the Oppo Find X8 Pro for a week now and the following is the first-hand account of my experience using Oppo’s new super premium smartphone.
The Find X8 series will be headlined by the X8 Ultra but meanwhile, we’ll discuss the X8 Pro, which will be Oppo’s top-end offering in the X series for the time being (till the Ultra variant is officially unveiled). The smartphone is extremely well crafted. There isn’t a nook or corner that would give you the opportunity to complain or leave you wanting for more. This device was built in the image of an ideal flagship smartphone that not only offers great hardware but also leaves the user fully satisfied as far as the design is concerned. You get what you pay for, that seems to be the motto of the Oppo Find X8 Pro.
Build quality and aesthetics were definitely not an afterthought with this one. The power button and volume keys are so well crafted that they put the Pixel 9 Pro XL to shame. The feedback you get when you press the keys is noteworthy.
The quad camera setup is simply breathtaking and I’m not talking about the aesthetics. The cameras are highly potent and capable of taking some truly brilliant photos. The Hasselblad partnership seems to have paid off without a doubt. The colour reproduction in the Find X8 Pro’s cameras is admirable. I’ll admit that I have focussed more on photography than videography ever since I got my hands on the device but I’m trying to change that.
The 50MP primary camera is the heart and soul of this ensemble. The 50MP ultrawide camera is a delight to use while the 50MP 3x telephoto is a very handy tool for portraits, street photography and just in general zooming into objects and people. Last but not least, the 50MP 6x telephoto, or as Oppo calls it ‘ultra-telephoto’, is one of those tools that you’re glad you have under your belt but aren’t sure when or how to use. Overall, this collection of glass on a smartphone is one of a kind. You are essentially getting two telephoto lenses at the price of one.
Portraiture is one of my personal favourites simply because it possesses a lot more individuality and character than regular photography. This is one of the reasons I believe that the Xiaomi 14 series is one of the best camera phones of 2024. Oppo’s Find X8 Pro allows for a great portrait experience with 1x, 2x, 3x and 6x zoom options.
4K video recording at 60fps is something that was expected. Honestly, I was expecting a bit more and was hoping that Oppo gives 120fps shooting in 4K video. Not only that, but there isn’t an option for 8K video either. A point to be noted here is that both the front and rear cameras are capable of 4K 60fps video shooting. Additionally, the 4K video supports Dolby Vision video. So, yay.
The attention grabber here, however, is the dedicated camera button at the bottom end of the right-hand side. The sensor button doesn’t have a click but instead uses haptic feedback. A double press launches the camera app while lightly pressing and sliding your fingers changes the focal length and zooms in and out. It is a handy tool that can potentially make the process of taking photos more efficient. Long-term usage, however, will be determined over time.
The display is an attention grabber, for sure. The fingerprint sensor isn’t as quick as the one I’ve used in the Galaxy S24 Ultra or the Pixel 9 Pro XL but it gets the job done. The DCI P3 colour gamut is evident. The colours are vibrant and rich in detail. The display seems to be perfect in every way imaginable. The 120Hz refresh rate is great for gamers, the colour accuracy works for photo editing and the 4,500 nits of peak brightness keep everyone happy even in the harshest of sunlight. For those who are wondering, yes, the display is Gorilla Glass 7i protected. Not only this, the entire phone is IP69 rated so no more worrying about spilling or splashing.
The variant I received has 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 512GB of non-expandable UFS 4.0 storage. This is ample for gaming, everyday performance, CPU-intensive tasks and event AI workloads. The Oppo Find X8 Pro is a promising entry into the super-premium smartphone segment. With a price tag of Rs 99,999, the smartphone offers a very holistic package that comprises all elements of a well-rounded high-end device. It also feels good to see such smartphones come up, ones that not only look pretty in the spec sheets but can also walk the talk in terms of performance, design and daily usage.
