The OnePlus 13 has launched in China, featuring the recently unveiled Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset and a quad-curved design. The global launch is expected soon, with specifications similar to those of the Chinese variant.
The OnePlus 13 officially becomes the first phone featuring the Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset which the Oppo Find X8 Ultra is also rumoured to have. OnePlus’s announcement for the global launch is eagerly awaited now. Expected to arrive in early 2025, possibly in January (like new OnePlus flagships always have in the past few years), the OnePlus 13 is generating quite some excitement. The Chinese variant has unveiled some glaring upgrades from the OnePlus 12 which is adding to the said excitement. These specifications are most likely to be launched globally as well.
First and foremost, the new OnePlus 13 has opted for a quad-curved display. In a quad-curved, all the four edges of the display are curved. This is different from what we saw in the OnePlus 12 as the new design chooses to be more on the flatter side with subtle contours around the edges. The 6.82-inch screen uses a BOE X2 OLED panel. The BOE X2 display is the world's first mobile phone display to receive DisplayMate A++ certification. High-frequency PWM dimming up to 3840Hz will also be supported by this display. It has ‘lights off eye protection’ screen technology as well. Additionally, this display will have a Crystal Shield super-ceramic glass protection. For those who do not know, BOE is a Chinese display manufacturer founded in 1993.
The new OnePlus 13 is touted to have the advantage of a straight screen, which will provide protection from accidental touches and at the same time, will offer a good feel of soft edges. As far as the middle frame is concerned, OnePlus has especially designed an ‘ultra-narrow micro-arc middle frame’. What this translates to is that the frame is rounded on both sides, it fits nicely in the palm and is very comfortable to hold with one just hand. At least, that’s what OnePlus is claiming. We'll get to know more when we actually hold the device.
It is important to note that for some reason, a huge amount of emphasis has been put on making the device lighter than its predecessor in order to make it feel lighter and better in the palm.
The display will be a big selling point for the Chinese smartphone this time around. The 8T LTPO display, the 1440p resolution, the 120Hz max refresh rate, the 4,500 nits peak brightness and of course the OLED panel make this display very lucrative.
The phone has a vibration motor this time which OnePlus claims will offer game controller-level haptics. Furthermore, the camera unit of the OnePlus 13 is expected to blow the flagship camera smartphone segment wide open. The phone will probably offer a 50MP primary Sony LYT808 sensor (same as the Oppo Find X8) with optical image stabilisation (OIS). The 50MP LYT600 sensor is said to have a periscope telephoto with 3x optical zoom which will take portraits as well as zoomed-in shots. The 50MP Samsung S5KJN5 sensor responsible for ultrawide shots will double up as a macro camera as well.
On the video front, we will get 8K video at 30FPS, 4K video at 60FPS and 1080p video at 480FPS which is mind-boggling, to say the least. The OnePlus 13 will have the Adreno 830 on the GPU front along with a UFS 4.0 storage.
Last but not least, the smartphone has a 6,000mAh silicon-carbon battery with 100W wired and 50W wireless charging.
The spec sheet alone puts the OnePlus 13 leagues ahead of the OnePlus 12. There are definitely many features in this newly unveiled device that are inciting intrigue among techies and enthusiasts. The OnePlus 12 was released last year in China and debuted in India in February. The smartphone made a fabulous entry in the already hypercompetitive flagship smartphone category which had already seen the launch of the Galaxy S24 Ultra with the same Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset. It also brought along its slightly underpowered sibling, the OnePlus 12R also dubbed as the flagship killer.
The OnePlus 12 had many quirks that made it a favourite among enthusiasts. It was all about refinements. We had the 8 Gen 3 chipset which made the 12 the second phone of 2024 to be launched with it. This phone also marked the fourth year of the brand’s partnership with camera maker Hasselblad. OnePlus paraded the 12 like a peacock with its LYT 808 sensor, the 100W wired and 50W wireless charging and its 2K AMOLED display with ProXDR technology.
The OnePlus 13 is going to have to make a really strong impact to make a dent in the current flagship smartphone market. It will definitely have an advantage being the first to be launched with the next-gen Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset with Qualcomm’s Oryon cores but it will need to give an overall better experience as devices like the S25 Ultra, Find X8 and X200 will soon flood the markets as well.
More updates on the OnePlus 13 coming soon. Stay Tuned.
