NXP Semiconductors and Renesas Electronics on Wednesday revealed plans to increase their presence in India in an effort to boost the country’s growing semiconductor industry. NXP announced an investment exceeding USD 1 billion in India-based research and development (R&D), while Renesas revealed its intentions to more than double its headcount in the country by next year.
At SEMICON India 2024, Kurt Sievers, CEO of NXP Semiconductors, spoke on the company’s long-standing presence in India, where it has been operating for about 50 years with a workforce of over 3,000 employees.
Sievers said that India is transitioning from being a hub for global semiconductor innovation to a critical player in developing solutions specifically for the Indian market. He pointed out that NXP’s increased R&D investment would strengthen India’s semiconductor ecosystem and fuel advancements in industries like automotive and industrial technology.
“Our industry needs a long-term orientation. All investments are for the long term. So, a stable environment which is founded on trust, innovation and democracy is exactly the environment which we need to work for the long run. NXP is here to stay. NXP is committed to boost the ecosystem of semiconductors in India, for India and for the world,” said Sievers.
Meanwhile, Japan-based Renesas Electronics is also expanding its footprint in India. The Japanese semiconductor giant announced plans to significantly increase its operations in Bangalore, Hyderabad and Delhi, with the aim of doubling its workforce in India by the end of next year.
Renesas has partnered with CG Power to build one of India’s first semiconductor assembly and test facilities in Sanand, Gujarat, which will further strengthen India’s semiconductor manufacturing capabilities.
Hidetoshi Shibata, CEO of Renesas Electronics, expressed his excitement about the company’s growing role in India. “We are expanding our operations presence here in India, with a view to more than doubling our headcount in India by sometime next year, to shoulder a lot more of the value-added advanced semiconductor design activities for the India market as well as for the global market,” said Shibata.
