On Independence Day 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged Indians to leverage its rich cultural legacy to create "Made in India" gaming products and establish a leading position in the global animation sector. Speaking from the Red Fort, he emphasised the importance of innovation in these industries to capitalise on rising markets and tap into indigenous potential.
In his speech, he emphasised the necessity of utilising India's historical heritage and literature to develop indigenous gaming products. He offered a vision for India to become a global leader in both gaming and animation, urging Indian youngsters, millennials, IT professionals and AI experts to spearhead the shift while highlighting India's ability to succeed in these areas and enter global markets.
Modi's address emphasised the gaming industry's considerable opportunities, including its rapid growth and the opportunity for major talent development. According to a KPMG report, the Indian gaming business is expected to reach USD 8.6 billion by 2027 (India Gaming Market Report, KPMG, 2024). The rise of mobile gaming, fuelled by increased smartphone usage and internet connectivity, has played a significant role in this boom.
He also indicated a desire for India to become a big player in animation by using its cultural legacy to compete globally. According to estimates, the Indian animation market might be worth USD 2.4 billion by 2025 (India Animation Industry Report, PwC, 2024). This expansion is fuelled by a robust talent pool and rising demand for animated content.
In his customary address to the nation, he mentioned the tremendous possibilities in the gaming business, citing the rising market and the potential for fresh talent development. He suggested that every Indian child and professional should be encouraged to participate to and lead in the gaming industry, not just by playing, but also by promoting Indian gaming products around the world.
