Modi's Demonetisation Strategy Is A History Without Precedence

It's a conventional wisdom that "a thousand friends - not enough; one enemy - too many". However, to many it appears that India's premier Narendra Modi has completely ridiculed this dictum when he declared demonetization of 500 and 1000 currency notes.

The opposition's argument is that incompetence of banks to render adequate supply and delivery of new currency notes, which includes long ques at ATMs - private and public bank included - is sure to attract ire of the masses. That, there are also a great many good people with black money who always did good - no matter what! Now, how true are all these arguments?

First, it's important to note that the abrupt yet well thought of move by Modi government has made every black money bearer - including that of his party and coalition - fuming with anger. Although, their anger is suppressed, should they get a chance they are sure to ask for his resignation by sucking back to the old guard of the party. The question therefore is: will this happen? If yes, when? Because if this doesn't happen he has already won his second term, hands down.

First of all, the undeclared cardinal rule is that 'There are neither eternal enemies nor eternal friends in politics' - everyone stays around until their self-interests are served. Until their desires and demands are met - they'll continue to be your ally; the moment they find a better option - they switch sides. However, the self-interest in politics - however - are a bit tricky. There are not just hundred - but thousand - shades of gray. The most important thing in politics is mass support.

It doesn't matter if the nation is ruled by a king or a dictator - if the person has the unconditional support of the masses - that individual is verily the most powerful person in the land. Undermining such person(s) is verily a recipe for disaster. This is the reason why politics exists; not everything can be won by arms and armies.

Modi currently enjoys the absolute support of the people. Yes, they have troubles with the current situation. But if only you can be on those lines outside banks and ATMs you'd know that their ire is against the banks. Competence of banks is horrible; this is truer with public sector ones. Incompetence is nothing new; people can see it all the way back to the days of Indira Gandhi's nationalization. Socialistic policies of the yester leaders have led to incompetence in establishments beyond comprehension.

People understand this. A great many - if not all - realize that black money, that which can make most damage, are in the denominations of 500 and 1000. It costs 500 note to pay for every stone pelting individual in Kashmir, 1000 notes party worker (read goons) during elections, the same is true with dubious notes infiltrated through the underworld. It doesn't take a genius to recognize that all these people have gone bankrupt overnight.

Now, such people were already the enemies of the land. Everyone wanted them to be brought to just in one shot. This set of people were essentially hardworking, law abiding, tax paying as well as patriotic individuals who are more than a majority in the land. These were also the people who were fast losing faith in the political establishment. This move by Modi has verily brought back their faith. They know the consequences and aren't worried to put up with inconveniences for a few days.

There's nothing greater making people believe in you. Every leader knows how insurmountable this task is. One cannot buy belief; however, he might bribe one - at least for a while. Just like votes which were being brought across the country during the time of elections. What Modi has achieved, while giving the anti-national black money bearers a certain bankruptcy, is the faith of every nationalist Indian in him. He has assured them that if you are hardworking and taxpaying - you'll be protected and respected. This is something which hasn't happened in India for decades now. Modi has made a place in the heart of every loyal Indian across the divide of cast, creed, religion as well as race.

Therefore, even if he has made a good number of enemies - who already were - he has made them irrelevant and obsolete. He has marked a dawn of an era in India where every hard working person will sleep blissfully and the others will practically be bereft of it.
