Meta has decided to discontinue its Workplace app, a platform tailored for work-focused communication and collaboration. The move comes as Meta shifts its strategic focus towards investing more heavily in artificial intelligence (AI) and metaverse technologies.
Workplace, which was first introduced in 2016, will be phased out starting in June 2026 for customers. However, Meta intends to continue using the platform internally as its messaging board. Current Workplace users will still have access to the product until August 2025, providing a transition period for organisations to adjust to alternative solutions.
In light of the discontinuation, Meta has designated Zoom’s Workvivo product as its preferred migration partner for Workplace users seeking an alternative platform.
The decision to discontinue Workplace indicates to Meta’s increasing focus on developing AI products and exploring the potential of the metaverse—a shared virtual environment envisioned as the successor to the mobile internet. By reallocating resources towards these areas, Meta will look to drive innovation and stay at the forefront of technological advancements.
Despite the shift in focus, Meta assures Workplace customers that billing and payment arrangements will remain unchanged until August of the current year. Currently, Workplace offers a monthly core plan priced at USD 4 per user, with additional add-ons available starting from USD 2 per user each month. Monthly bills are calculated based on the number of billable users, unless an organization has a fixed plan in place.
