The Government of India has appointed K Sanjay Murthy as the new Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India. Murthy, an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the 1989 batch from the Andhra Pradesh cadre, is currently serving as the Secretary of the Department of Higher Education in the Ministry of Education.
In his current role as Secretary, Murthy has been instrumental in overseeing policies related to higher education, ensuring the effective implementation of government initiatives, and working closely with educational institutions to foster development in the sector.
Murthy's appointment as the CAG comes after the tenure of Girish Chandra Murmu, who held the position since August 2020. Murmu, before his appointment as CAG, was the first Lieutenant-Governor of the newly formed Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. Murthy’s vast experience in administration and governance positions him well to take on the responsibilities of auditing the accounts of the Government of India and promoting transparency in public finances.
With his background in managing educational policy and his extensive bureaucratic career, Murthy’s leadership as the CAG is expected to bring a strong focus on ensuring fiscal accountability and enhancing the role of the CAG’s office in safeguarding public funds.
