The Indian government is gearing up to enhance its support for the semiconductor industry with the second phase of the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM). Akash Tripathi, CEO at ISM, told reporters that the new phase will include expanded funding and support for semiconductor chip fabrication, packaging units, and other critical components of the semiconductor ecosystem.
Tripathi revealed that approximately 20 new proposals are in the pipeline from semiconductor chip fabrication units, display fabrication companies, raw material suppliers, and chip packaging firms. The initiative points to the government's efforts to push the semiconductor sector over the next decade.
The expansion plan also targets attracting additional players such as raw material suppliers and gas companies, vital to the semiconductor supply chain.
The government-related independent business division acknowledged that supporting just the chip fabrication and packaging units will not be sufficient; a comprehensive approach is necessary to develop all aspects of the semiconductor ecosystem.
“We anticipate future investments in this sector, but fabs and OSATs alone won’t be enough. It’s clear that we need to support every component of the semiconductor ecosystem,” Tripathi said.
