Senior officials from the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), the Consumer Affairs Ministry, and leading e-commerce companies and consumer rights organisations met with Piyush Goyal, the Minister of Commerce and Industry, on Wednesday. The proposed e-commerce policy and e-commerce standards for consumer protection were the main topics of discussion at the conference, according to sources.
A Consumer Affairs Department official stated that the new e-commerce regulation will equalise the playing field between international and Indian marketplaces. No such business will be permitted to hold any equity in sellers selling on their platform or promote their own private brands on their site. The individual directly involved in drafting the policy added, "Rules will be the same for Amazon and an Indian marketplace." The draft policy will be made available to the public soon.
As Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal convened a final round of meetings with industry leaders like Amazon, Flipkart, and Tata Digital on Wednesday, the chances of the policy being presented soon appeared to be improving. Given the expanding e-commerce industry and shifting market dynamics, the meeting participants unanimously agreed that the e-commerce policy should be introduced as soon as possible, along with modifications to the Consumer Protection Act.
