The Indian government has approved the construction of two military airfields in the Lakshadweep islands. This decision will look to expand the reach of the armed forces in the region, with plans to build a new airfield in Minicoy and extend the existing facility on Agatti Island.
These developments are part of a tri-services proposal that recently received clearance, signaling a concerted effort to bolster both defense capabilities and regional connectivity.
The dual-use nature of these airfields is a noteworthy aspect, as they will accommodate both military operations and civil airliners, thereby promoting tourism in the picturesque island chain. The Minicoy airfield will be located at the naval base 'INS Jatayu,' which was commissioned in March. This base is strategically positioned as the nearest major military installation to the Maldives, underscoring its importance in regional security dynamics.
Minicoy's proximity to the Maldives is further highlighted by its closeness to Thuraakunu Island, which is just about 100 kilometres to the south, across the Vangaaru Channel. The extension of the airfield on Agatti Island, along with the new facility in Minicoy, is expected to significantly improve logistical support and operational flexibility for the Indian armed forces, while also providing a boost to the local economy through increased tourism and improved connectivity.
