Established in the same year as Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Indore, IIM Kozhikode (IIM-K) has proved its mettle in teaching and research and is considered one of the best IIMs among the existing 20 in the country.
Proving the same, IIM-K wrapped up its summer placements in record six days last month — achieving a 100 per cent recruitment record.
In another academic feat, it announced its executive post graduate programme for working professionals in 21 cities across India, through an exclusive partnership with Times Centre for Learning’s executive education brand TSW.
Situated on two hillocks and spread over 110 acres in the southern town of Calicut in Kerala, the institute has world class infrastructure that includes air-conditioned classrooms, guest care areas and executive hostels. IIM-K is also one of the few Centres for Development of Digital Libraries in the world and is a country leader.
Academics
IIM-K offers various management programmes such as Post Graduate Programme (PGP), Executive Post Graduate Programme (EPGP), Fellow Programme in Management (FPM), Management Development Programme (MDP) among others. “The cross cultural diversity and residential experience in the campus offers great opportunities to learn from each other, and is the foundation of the IIM-K culture and ethos of preparing ethical and socially conscious leaders, managers and entrepreneurs,” says Debabrata Chatterjee, dean administration, IIM-K.
The institute offers innovative courses such as “Competitive Strategy: The Game of Poker”, film-based pedagogy, etc. that help students and faculty explore possibilities outside the classroom.
Teaching strength
Faculty at IIM-Kozhikode engages in Research, Teaching in Post Graduate Programme, Interactive Distance Learning Programmes Faculty Development Programmes, and conducts one or more Management Development Programmes every year. They also actively participate in industry interaction seminars and national and international conferences. This keeps them in constant touch with recent developments in industry making education and training programmes more meaningful and relevant for students.
Student life
A unique feature of the campus is the Museum of Indian Business History that showcases the contribution of India’s business leaders in the making of India. The Museum is spread over 23,000 sq ft. and entails business-related historical artefacts of various successful business houses and conglomerates.
“What I cherish most about my experience in the institute is the rigour and practical insights our professors brought to the classrooms,” says Gomathy Aiyer, a 2014-15 alumnus of IIM-K.
Industry collaborations and placements
To keep management education relevant to present times, industry experts are invited to the campus for guest lectures. IIM-K also takes up several consulting projects across corporate and non-corporate sectors, public systems and government departments and provides them with analytical and problem solving support. Students are also involved in many such projects under the guidance of respective faculty members.
For this year’s summer placement, 119 companies participated in the placement process, and 370 students were recruited. A highlight of the season was the participation by esteemed companies such as Airtel, Boston Consulting Group, E&Y, HUL, ITC, JP Morgan Chase, KPMG, Microsoft, Mahindra, Nestle, Goldman Sachs, TAS, Vodafone, etc.
Highest domestic package at IIM-K stood at Rs 37 lakh per annum whereas average salaries rose by 12 per cent to stand at Rs 17.1 lakh per annum.
