HRD ministry has rolled out a new plan into its development list, this time for educating and training teachers by setting up a specialised university for Teachers Education.
To boost the quality of basic education in schools, NCERT (National Council for Education Research and Training) is looking for possibilities of establishing a Teachers’ University and preparing a ‘concept note’, following the orders of HRD Ministry.
"A panel of experts in the NCERT is already working on the concept note which would examine the requirement of such a University and how it could be established," PTI reported.
Though the Ministry keeps on introducing schemes for making the learning processes more solid through materialistic techniques, the idea to re-educate teachers might also help in improving teaching standards by dealing with the broad aspects of teachers’ education.
Officials said since such institutions exist abroad, to have a specialised university in India would be a great help to teachers’ learning process. Whether the transformation of any existing University would fulfil the need, or an entirely new institution is required, this would be examined soon. "For instance, there are regional institutes of the NCERT, it may be more feasible to convert one of them into a Teachers' University. These possibilities would be explored," they said.
As an add-on to the schools’ education development plan, HRD ministry may also ask NCERT to create educational content for one of the 32 DTH channels, planned to launch within few months.
"The NCERT content on education will be beamed right into homes across the country through these DTH channels, it is being planned," they said.
To make the education system more holistic, government is working on various projects and schemes, including a 'Vidyanjali' scheme under which retired defence personnel, people from Indian diaspora and women homemakers can volunteer for co-scholastic activities.
