How Box Office Numbers For Biggest Hit in Bollywood Changed Over Last 20 Years

Indian film industry has always operated on collection figures but a movie is considered a hit only if it is able to make certain numbers.

While ‘Baahubali 2: The Conclusion' continues to break all records at the box office and is racing towards a collection of Rs 1600 crore worldwide, it really makes you think about numbers, about the kind of business a movie does at the box office.

For the past 10 years or so, we have witnessed an increase in the intensity of the collection numbers at the box office making it extremely competitive like never before. It all started out with the Rs 100 crore club, and eventually now entering the Rs 400 crore bracket.

Aamir Khan starrer ‘Dangal’, that released in 23 May, is still running and continues to make a huge profit at the overseas box office. It now stands at Rs 1497.57 crore as of 23 May and is set to garner Rs 1500 crore at the worldwide box office collection, making it the second Indian film to achieve this feat, after ‘Baahubali 2: The Conclusion’.

Distribution as well as satellite rights for movies in the recent past have become a huge way to earn profits. ‘Dangal’ created yet another history and sold its satellite rights to Zee for a whopping Rs 75 crore, beating 'Dhoom 3' which was bought by Sony for approximately Rs 65 crore.

While 'Bajrangi Bhaijaan' sold its broadcast as well as digital rights to Star India for around Rs 60 crore, 'PK' sold its satellite rights for an estimate of Rs 85 crore at a guarantee that the movie, upon its release will do a business of Rs 300 crore at the domestic box office.
