Hindalco Industries, part of the Aditya Birla Group, has solidified its position as the world’s most sustainable aluminium company, achieving the top rank in the 2024 S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA) for the fifth straight year. Scoring 87 points—a 9-point increase from last year and 22 points ahead of its nearest competitor—Hindalco is the only aluminium company to hold this rank consistently.
This ranking places Hindalco in the top tier of the S&P Global Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI), which includes the most sustainable 10 per cent of the world’s largest companies by market cap. Hindalco reached the 100th percentile across multiple ESG parameters, particularly excelling in climate strategy, water management, waste reduction, and cybersecurity.
Satish Pai, Managing Director of Hindalco, credited the achievement to the company’s “inclusive approach to ESG,” with efforts ranging from zero-waste initiatives to net-zero emission goals. Hindalco’s projects, including a 100 MW carbon-free power project in Odisha, further highlight its commitment to climate action, earning the “Energy Transition Changemaker” award at COP28.
The company reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by 19.54 per cent from the FY2011-12 baseline and is on track to power 30 per cent of its operations with renewables by 2030. Additionally, Hindalco recycled 85 per cent of its operational waste in FY24, with three units receiving zero-waste to landfill certification.
Hindalco’s efforts extend to social initiatives, having invested Rs 154 crore in community programs that impacted over 2.5 million people. The company also scored an industry-leading 89 per cent in the social category and 84 per cent in governance, demonstrating strong transparency and accountability through its Risk Management and ESG Committee.
As the largest aluminium recycler, Hindalco’s US subsidiary, Novelis, recycled 2.3 million metric tonnes of aluminium in FY24, reducing carbon emissions significantly.
Hindalco’s sustained success in ESG rankings highlights its leadership in environmental stewardship, social responsibility, and governance, setting a benchmark for sustainability in the aluminium industry worldwide.
