Its already been six months into the year by now and apart from ‘Baahubali 2: The Conclusion’ not a single other movie has managed to capture the audiences. Looking back at last year around this time, we had already had releases like ‘Kapoor and Sons’, ‘Airlift’, ‘Neerja’, ‘Udta Punjab’ and so on which were not only commercial successes but critically acclaimed for their sheer content and dramatization.
Again in 2015, we saw films like ‘NH10’, ‘Margarita With A Straw’, ‘Dil Dhadakne Do’ and ‘Tanu Weds Manu Returns’ that managed to capture box office theatres and audiences’ appreciation by the time it was already halfway into the year.
But with the release of ‘Tubelight’ this Eid, is this Salman Khan- Kabir Khan duo set to create history and become one of the highest grossers of the year 2017? This actor-director duo has previously given us blockbusters like ‘EK Tha Tiger’ and ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ and so one can only hope and predict that this new release will manage to sweep the masses as well as the box office collection figures.
Halfway into the year 2017, we witnessed releases like Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Raees’ and Akshay Kumar’s ‘Jolly LLB 2’ that are the highest grossers of the year till now. While, bigger releases like ‘Badrinath Ki Dulhaniya’ and ‘OK Jaanu’ did moderately well, Vishal Bhardwaj’s ‘Rangoon’ tanked at the box office with neither getting critical acclaim nor good box office numbers.
‘Hindi Medium’ managed to stand tall and held its head high as this film managed to capture audiences and the box office beyond expectations. Rajkumar Rao starrer survival drama ‘Trapped’ managed to impress the critics but failed to rake in good numbers at the box office.
Overall it has been tough six months for the movies at the box office with some small releases doing extremely well both commercially as well as critically but a number of big releases tanked at the box office.
