Greg Brockman Returns To OpenAI After Brief Hiatus, Takes On New Technical Role

Greg Brockman, co-founder and former president of OpenAI, has rejoined the artificial intelligence company following a three-month leave. Declaring his return on X (formerly Twitter), Brockman indicated he would be taking on a new role at OpenAI, working closely with CEO Sam Altman on major technical initiatives.

Brockman’s return comes amid shifts within the Microsoft-backed AI company. In a post on X, he wrote, "longest vacation of my life complete. back to building @OpenAI." An OpenAI spokesperson confirmed his rejoining, noting that Brockman will focus on ‘key technical challenges’ for the company in his revised role. Bloomberg News first reported the development, depicting that Brockman and Altman have been collaborating to define the new position.

The leadership reshuffle at OpenAI follows a period of considerable turnover among its founding team. Notably, former Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati, co-founder John Schulman and co-founder Ilya Sutskever have departed to establish their own AI startups. These changes come on the heels of a high-profile transition in November 2023, when Altman briefly exited OpenAI following his sudden dismissal by the board, a decision that attracted considerable public attention due to the limited explanation provided. Altman ultimately returned to lead OpenAI after the tumultuous episode.
