Alphabet Inc.'s Google has initiated significant layoffs affecting hundreds of employees within its digital assistant, hardware and engineering teams. The company confirmed the workforce reductions, specifying the impact on teams dedicated to the development of Google Assistant, augmented reality hardware and the central engineering organisation.
Throughout the latter half of 2023, several teams at Google underwent internal restructuring to enhance efficiency and resource alignment with major product priorities. A spokesperson for Google stated that these organisational changes are ongoing, with some roles being eliminated globally as part of the cost-cutting measures.
The layoffs have not gone unnoticed, with affected employees already receiving the news. However, Google assures that these individuals will be given the opportunity to apply for available positions within the company, softening the blow for those facing job displacement.
The Alphabet Workers Union, representing some of Google's workforce, has voiced its criticism of the layoffs. In a statement posted on the social network X (formerly Twitter), the union expressed concerns about the company's decision to terminate employees while still reporting substantial profits. The union emphasised its commitment to fighting for job security and pledged not to relent until the employment of its members is safeguarded.
