In a narrow victory, Narendra Modi secured a third consecutive term as Prime Minister of India With the support of his National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. For Modi, the global reaction especially from political figures such as the Italian PM, the Maldivian President Muizzu etc. was swift and pronounced, with world leaders expressing hopes for continued collaboration and strengthened bilateral relations.
Nepal, Mauritius and Bhutan were among the first to extend their congratulations, highlighting the friendly relations among neighbouring countries. The Prime Minister of Bhutan, Tshering Tobgay, extended his congratulatory wishes via a tweet, expressing his anticipation to work closely with the Prime Minister to further strengthen the relations between our two countries.
In reply PM Modi thanked him calling him a friend and reassuring, "Bharat-Bhutan relations will continue to grow from strength to strength."
Mauritian Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth congratulated PM Narendra Modi on his "laudable victory for a historic third term" and expressed confidence that under PM Modi’s leadership, India will continue to achieve remarkable progress. The Mauritius-India special relationship was also acknowledged, with the Mauritius PM extending his best wishes. Prime Minister Modi's victory over Congress candidate Ajay Rai by a margin of 1,52,513 votes was confirmed by the Election Commission of India.
Narendra Modi was congratulated by the Prime Minister of Nepal, Prachanda on the completion of the world's largest democratic exercise. He remarked and applauded the enthusiastic participation of the people of India.
In Italy, politician and stateswoman Giorgia Meloni also congratulated him and stated,, “Congratulations on the new electoral victory and my warmest wishes for good work. I am certain that we will continue to work together to strengthen the friendship that unites Italy and India, and to consolidate cooperation on the various issues that bind us, for the well-being of our nations and our peoples.”
Meanwhile, the Maldivian President Muizzu congratulated PM Modi, in a message that emphasized the ongoing collaboration between the two nations in their efforts to work together towards advancing common interests for shared prosperity and stability in both countries amid the ongoing diplomatic tussle between both countries as China's influence grows on the island nation.
Notably, Modi's BJP did not secure as overwhelming several votes in their favour as they did in the 2014 elections. The INDIA bloc has prevented the BJP from attaining a majority, resulting in an intriguing political landscape. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed gratitude to the people for their continued faith in the NDA, calling it a historic achievement in India's history. The BJP maintained a strong lead in key states such as Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Assam, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Uttarakhand and Madhya Pradesh.
