Former Chief Technology Officer of OpenAI, Mira Murati, is reportedly in discussions with venture capitalists to secure funding for her new AI startup.
As per a Reuters report, the venture aims to develop proprietary AI models and is still in its early stages. But Murati’s reputation as a leader in the artificial intelligence space is expected to attract significant investment. While it remains unclear whether Murati will assume the role of CEO, her departure from OpenAI has created considerable anticipation around her next move.
Murati left OpenAI in late September, citing personal reasons for her decision to step down. Her resignation came amid governance changes at OpenAI, which included the removal of control from its non-profit board. Reuters sources revealed that Barret Zoph, a notable AI researcher who left OpenAI on the same day, might also join Murati’s venture. Zoph’s involvement, however, has not been confirmed.
During her six-year tenure at OpenAI, Murati became a prominent figure in the development of transformative technologies, leading major projects like ChatGPT and DALL-E. Her leadership was pivotal in securing a multibillion-dollar partnership with Microsoft, OpenAI’s largest financial backer. Murati frequently represented the company in public, including the launch of GPT-4o earlier this year.
Murati’s new venture adds her to a growing list of former OpenAI executives who have left to launch their own AI startups. This trend includes companies like Anthropic and Safe Superintelligence, both of which have emerged as significant players in the competitive AI landscape.
