NLC India, ACC, and JSW Energy Utkal are among the five companies that secured coal mines on the opening day of the tenth round of commercial coal mine auctions, according to an official statement from the coal ministry on Thursday, 21 November, 2024.
ACC won a coal mine in Madhya Pradesh, while NLC India and JSW Energy Utkal each bagged a block in Odisha. The other two successful bidders were Mineware Advisors Pvt and Shreeji Nuravi Coal Mining and Trading Pvt .
A total of nine coal blocks were put up for sale during this auction round. On the first day, five blocks were auctioned, of which one was fully explored, while four were partially explored. These five mines have combined geological reserves of 2,630.77 million tonnes, with a cumulative peak-rated capacity of 12 million tonnes per annum (MTPA).
The auction process for commercial mining began on 21 June 2024, with forward e-auctions for the nine mines commencing on 21 November.
“These five coal mines, upon operationalisation, will generate an annual revenue of Rs 1,106.91 crore, attract a capital investment of Rs 1,800 crore, and provide employment to 16,224 people,” the ministry’s statement noted.
This marks another significant step in India's push for self-reliance in coal production, supporting both the country’s industrial growth and employment generation.
