Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has entered the immigration debate in the United States, calling for a significant revamp of the current system. In a recent social media post, Musk expressed frustration over the existing hurdles faced by legal immigrants while highlighting the relative ease of illegal entry.
Taking to X, Musk strongly advocated for shutting down illegal immigration and simultaneously increasing the opportunities for legal immigrants, particularly those with valuable skills.
Musk's comments were prompted by a post from Aaron Levie, CEO of Box, who shared data illustrating the growth in H-1B visa applicants over the past two decades.
The H-1B visa is a crucial employment authorisation document that enables foreign individuals to work in the United States in specialised fields where their expertise is essential. Musk's focus on legal immigration aligns with the need for a more efficient process, especially for skilled workers in the US.
Why Immigration Debate Is Important For India
According to a recent report by the US Immigration and Citizenship Services (USCIS), during fiscal year 2022, a substantial number of H-1B visa applications were approved, totaling 4.41 lakh. Of these, nearly 72.6 per cent (3.2 lakh) were granted to Indian applicants, highlighting the demand for skilled foreign workers in the US job market. China followed with 55,038 approvals (12.5 per cent of total approvals), and Canada secured 4,235 approvals (1 per cent of the total).
