Eight Indian institutes have made it to the list of QS World University Rankings of the top 500 global higher educational institutes.
In a written reply to the Lok Sabha, Union HRD Minister Smriti Irani disclosed the rankings of the eight institutes from India on the international list.
Bangalore's Indian Institute of Science and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi are placed 147th and 179th respectively in the QS World University Rankings for 2015-16. IIT Delhi ranked at number 235 in 2014 and 222nd in 2013.
IIT Bombay is at 202nd position this year, IIT Madras is at 254th position, IIT Kanpur stands at 271 place, and IIT Kharagpur occupies the 286th spot. IIT Roorkee's ranking is 391, while IIT Guwahati is placed between 451 and 460.
Top institutions like Indian Institute of Science and Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) are known for producing high quality research comparable to the best in the world.
However, since many of these ranking systems attach considerable importance to perception, despite faring well in the research, many institutions from India have not secured the ranks as per their performance.
While working on their strengths, the Indian higher education institutions would need to work on improving their perception index if they have to better their global rankings.
For a more objective assessment based on performance, the government has brought out the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) for Higher Education Institutions.
Under this, each institution is evaluated on 5 broad parameters - teaching and learning resources, research, graduation outcomes, outreach and inclusive nature, and public perception.
