The University of Delhi has chosen to name its upcoming colleges after Veer Savarkar and late BJP leader Sushma Swaraj. The decision was made recently during the university's executive council meeting, according to reports.
The university's academic council met in August and decided to name new colleges/centres after Sushma Swaraj, Swami Vivekananda, Veer Savarkar, and Sardar Patel. Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Savitri Bai Phule, Arun Jaitley, Choudhary Brahm Prakash, and CD Deshmukh were also proposed by the council. The council had given the Vice-Chancellor authority to confirm the names.
Kunal Sehrawat, Delhi president of the National Students Union of India, criticised the decision in August. Kunal Sehrawat remarked on his official Twitter account, he wrote, ''If you decide to name the college after Savarkar, we would also buy a bottle of Soot." According to the President of the NSUI Delhi, if a signboard with Savarkar name is put outside the proposed institution, it will be 'blackened.'
Meanwhile, despite the fact that the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) has permitted the reopening of schools, colleges, and other educational institutions, Delhi University has yet to make an official decision on full reopening. Several student organisations have been demonstrating, asking that the university be reopened. While the All India Students' Association (AISA) has been on a five-day hunger strike outside the arts faculty building, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has called for a demonstration on all college campuses on Friday.
