The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Navy successfully carried out two consecutive flight tests of the Vertical Launch Short Range Surface to Air Missile (VLSRSAM). The second test, conducted on 13 September 2024, at the Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Chandipur, Odisha, followed a similar successful trial just a day earlier.
The missile demonstrated its effectiveness by intercepting a high-speed aerial target flying at a low altitude, simulating a sea-skimming threat. This test showcased the VLSRSAM's precision in neutralizing such targets. The earlier test on September 12 had also seen the missile successfully engaging a low-altitude target, further confirming the reliability of the weapon system and validating recent upgrades to its components.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO, the Indian Navy, and all teams involved for the success. He highlighted that the advanced missile system, equipped with modern technologies, will further strengthen India's armed forces.
Samir V Kamat, Secretary of the Department of Defence R&D and Chairman of DRDO, also extended his congratulations to the teams, emphasising the importance of these successful tests for India's defence preparedness.
