Delhi Students Can Now Avail Delhi Government Student Loan Scheme In Other States

Delhi students will now be able to avail loans under the Delhi government’s Higher Education and Skill Development Guarantee Scheme, even if they even wish to study outside Delhi in any government run institution.

Earlier the scheme was only restricted to funding for Delhi students who were enrolled in any government run institute in the Capital itself. This step taken by the Delhi government came about after the Cabinet meeting on Tuesday(29th August), chaired by Delhi Chief Minister, Arvind Kejriwal.

According to the scheme, students who wish to pursue higher education are given Rs. 10 lakh without any collateral or any third party guarantee. Students will also be given the required amount of time to finish the course and a year after to find a job before they have to start paying the EMIs.

According to a report by HT, deputy chief minister, Manish Sisodia who also holds the portfolio of education department said at a press conference post the Cabinet meeting, “Now, if a student of Delhi studies in any government college or government-run institution, be it IITs, IIMs, or any other institution, even other state government institutions, they will also get the loan.”

The scheme that has been passed now was first sparked by Delhi Chief Minister, Arvind Kejriwal when he spoke of the idea in May this year while interacting with students who had cracked the IIT JEE (Mains) exams.

The scheme helps the qualified students who have the required qualifications to get a student loan, even if they wish to study outside Delhi in any state run institute or college.

Post the Cabinet meeting, it was also decided that 55,000 students who failed the class 9 exams twice through CBSE and then the class 10 corresponding exams would be allowed to take the class 10 exams through National Institute of Open Schooling.
