Directed by Kabir Khan and starring Salman Khan, this duo has given us blockbusters like Ek Tha Tiger (2012) and Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015), both of which were the highest grossers of their respective years but can the same be predicted for Tubelight?
Apart from ‘Baahubali 2: The Conclusion’ that has completed 8 weeks at the box office and is still running in theatres across the country, the film industry hasn’t managed to muster up the business that it does every year, now that we are already halfway into the year.
Salman Khan has had a lot of releases on Eid in the past few years. In 2011, ‘Bodyguard’ opened up to a business of Rs 88.75 crore (Wed-Sun). 2012 saw ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ which eventually became the highest grosser of its release year, it opened upto a weekend business of Rs 100.16 crore (Wed- Sun).
In the year 2014, ‘Kick’ released and recorded a collection of Rs 83.83 crore (Fri-Sun). ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ which released in the year 2015 became the highest grosser of its year, it managed a weekend business of Rs 102.60 crore (Fri- Sun).
And finally last year, ‘Sultan’ released with an opening collection of Rs 105.53 crore (Wed-Sun) of which the record remains unbroken.
‘Tubelight’ has already beaten the lifetime business of ‘Hindi Medium’ and has raked in a decent business but the collections are definitely below expectations for a Salman Khan movie. The film only managed a business of Rs 21.15 crore on its first Friday (23 June), Rs 21.17 crore on Saturday (24 June) and Rs 22.45 crore on Sunday (25 June), collecting only Rs 64.77 crore till Sunday.
It was predicted that the business would take a jump and manage a better collection on the occasion of Eid but only a collection of RS 19.09 crore was recorded even on Monday, bringing the total collection to Rs 83.86 crore till Monday (26 June).
