OpenAI's ChatGPT, an AI chatbot, was back online on Friday after an outage disrupted services for thousands of users worldwide. The issue, which lasted approximately 30 minutes, was resolved later in the evening, according to OpenAI.
OpenAI acknowledged the service disruption on its website, declaring, "Issues with ChatGPT have now been resolved." Most users regained access, though a few continued to experience issues.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman addressed the outage on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), noting the downtime and adding a frown emoji. Altman commented, "We are much, much better at reliability than we used to be, but clearly more work in front of us." The outage was recorded on the tracking platform Downdetector.com, which showed that over 19,403 users had reported disruptions.
Since its release in November 2022, ChatGPT has grown rapidly, amassing 250 million weekly active users. This growth has significantly boosted OpenAI's valuation to USD 157 billion, a sharp increase from its USD 14 billion valuation in 2021. Revenue has surged to USD 3.6 billion, far surpassing initial projections and showing ChatGPT's strong user base and commercial success in the AI industry.
