Things have not been well for Sidharth Malhotra at the box-office for the past few years. Just when we thought that things can’t go worse than Baar Baar Dekho, A Gentleman happened. Barring Kapoor & Sons, none of the other releases in the past 2 years have worked for the actor.
A Gentleman, being a typical action commercial Bollywood flick, was riding high on expectations. The film was aggressively promoted and made at a budget of over Rs 50 crore. The trailer of the film received thumbs up from the audience and the music was decent. Looking at the pre-release buzz, A Gentleman was expected to rake in Rs 20-25 crore in the opening weekend itself. Well, what happened was rather shocking. The film is likely to wrap up below Rs 20 crore. Yes, a lifetime total of less than Rs 20 crore.
With the sinking city of Mumbai, what sank was the hope that A Gentleman had from the city. Mumbai circuit was supposed to perform decently for the action flick, but the expectations took a surprise toll. The circuit was expected to witness a healthy jump on Saturday (26th August) and Sunday (27th August), after the Ganesh Chaturthi holiday on Friday (25th August), but weather had some different plans for the city.
Similarly, the Ram Rahim convict and the riots that followed worsened the situation in the Delhi NCR areas. What’s important is the fact that Mumbai and Delhi NCR are the major contributing circuits for a film and in the case of A Gentleman, both of them failed. Well, the makers must not have seen it coming.
A Gentleman received average reviews from the critics and the word of mouth has been decent. After a slow start on Friday with Rs 4.04 crore, the film was unable to pick over the weekend. A Gentleman collected Rs 13.13 crore in the first three days. Things got worse for the movie in the weekdays. Monday and Tuesday showed very dismal collection. There was a clear no-show from the audience for the movie. The film collected close to Rs 2.4 crore in the two weekdays, taking its total collection to Rs 15.5 crore. The film will hardly sustain the remaining weekdays and is likely to give up by the coming weekend. Also, the chances of A Gentleman performing in week-2 is nil because of the release of Ajay Devgn’s Baadshaho and Ayushmann Khurrana’s Shubh Mangal Savdhan.
Sidharth’s last release Baar Baar Dekho was one of the biggest box-office upset of the year 2016. In 2017, A Gentleman is on the same terms and will be among the biggest box-office flops of the year. Comparing Sidharth’s previous releases; Baar Baar Dekho made Rs 31 crore at the box-office, Kapoor & Sons had a lifetime total of Rs 78 crore and the 2014 release Hasee Toh Phasee raked in Rs 38 crore.
After the huge debacle of A Gentleman, Sidharth has two very intresting films lined up for release in very quick time. The actor will have high hopes on Ittefaq and Aiyaary which are stated to release in November 2017 and January 2018 respectively.
