India’s workforce is expected to grow by 33.89 million by 2028, reaching a total of 457.62 million, with emerging technologies set to create 2.73 million new tech jobs. This growth will be driven by the demand for tech skills across various industries, particularly in retail, manufacturing, education and healthcare, according to a new study commissioned by ServiceNow.
A new report by ServiceNow, based on research from Pearson, projects significant growth in India’s workforce, with emerging technologies poised to generate 2.73 million new tech jobs by 2028. India’s labour force is set to increase from 423.73 million in 2023 to 457.62 million by 2028, driven by economic growth and technological transformation.
The retail sector is expected to lead this employment surge, requiring an additional 6.96 million workers. This growth will present opportunities for professionals to upskill in areas like software application development and data engineering. Other sectors, including manufacturing (1.50 million jobs), education (0.84 million jobs) and healthcare (0.80 million jobs), will also see job creation as a result of economic growth and the integration of emerging technologies.
Tech job demand is also increasing across industries. In particular, software application developers are expected to see a rise of 109,700 new positions. Other notable roles include systems software developers (48,800 new jobs), data engineers (48,500 new jobs), web developers (48,500 new jobs), data analysts (47,800 new jobs) and software testers (45,300 new jobs). The demand for specialised roles, such as data integration specialists, database architects and data scientists, is also expected to grow, with increases ranging from 42,700 to 43,300 positions.
Emerging technologies, including Generative AI, are expected to reshape existing tech roles. For instance, systems administrators will see the largest shift, with 6.9 hours of their weekly tasks automated or augmented by these technologies. Other roles, such as AI systems engineers and implementation consultants, will also benefit from AI integration, which will streamline repetitive tasks, enabling professionals to focus on more strategic work.
The research conducted by Faethm by Pearson’s Labour Market Insights (LMI) modeling provides insights into how emerging technologies will affect job roles over the next 15 years. By analysing current task workloads, the model estimates the impact of technology on industries and roles, offering a detailed view of the evolving job market in India.
